About this Location
Naivasha is located on the shore of Lake Naivasha along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway and is a popular tourist destination renown as a world class birding destination. Naivasha makes the perfect getaway or a starter for a tour safari for its serene and cool weather. The lake itself is not technically a national park since most of the land around it is privately owned, but there is plenty of wildlife drawn by the lake’s waters. The lake is host to a variety of game including buffalo, zebras, waterbuck, giraffe and the ever elusive black-faced colobus monkey. It is also home to many hippos that can be seen lying in the shallow waters on the northern shore. Lake Naivasha’s allure is in the fact that it is a freshwater lake, making it a great place to spot birds preying on the healthy fish population that inhabits the lake including black bass, tilapia and Crayfish. Preying birds spotted include the long-tailed and great cormorants, along with Fish Eagles, Pelicans, and various types of Kingfishers. Naivasha is also a good place to see the grey-backed fiscal and the black-lored babbler. Other major attractions in Naivasha include, Hell’s Gate National Park, Crescent Island, Elsamere and the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary.
Activities: Hiking, biking, and rock climbing. Boat trips on the lake are widely available which is a great way to spend an afternoon or morning.
